Is there any standard discussing about acceptable vibration limits in vertical machines.

    Anurag,
If you are talking about vertical pumps for the new equipment you can use limits from API610 standard. For overhauled equipment you have to make your own specs or use API standard.

If you are looking for specs for casing vibration, I would recommend ISO 10816-3. There are four tables from which to choose, depending on the power or configuration of the equipment. The thresholds cited are in units of mm/sec rms. People in the US may, then, have to convert to different units.

I believe the decision that must be made in picking out a spec for a vertical machine lies in the discussion about "flexible" vs "rigid" machines. Each table gives thresholds for each of these categories. The paragraph in 10816-3 that defines "flexible vs rigid" recommends that vertical machines are, generally, flexible.

So...to summarize, I would recommend ISO 10816-3. Pick out a table that most closely matches your equipment, and use the thresholds cited for flexible equipment.

Maximum limits for vibration on vertical pumps per Hydraulic Institute are:

0.26 inch per second RMS for HP from 1 to 10 &
    0.26 (in/sec RMS)for 10 HP and 0.34 (in/sec RMS) for 400 HP. Draw a line on a graph paper for anything between 10 HP and 400 HP.

This is applicable to end suction solid handling pumps.

    Riyaz,
Could you please cite the Hydraulic Institute standard. I would like to order a copy.
    Thanks in advance,
    George

George - The version I have is:
ANSI/HI 9.6.4-2000 American National Standard for Centrifugal and Vertical Pumps for Vibration Measurements and Allowable Values

It appears up to date by my research.

There are different acceptance values by pump type, orientation, and power.
